Keep it simple stupid - online condition monitoring

'Keep It Simple Stupid'.

The KISS philosophy is something that I think we should all do more of, my aging brain certainly thinks it's the best way to go for sure.

It's an approach that I feel should be brought into online condition monitoring for machinery. Take a look at this example, it doesn't need to be complicated, it doesn't need to be hard to understand, it should give you relevant information quickly and in an easy to understand format.

Here's an installation that we've done in Ireland with our good friends DERRY SHEEHAN and the guys at Avonmore Electrical Co. Ltd.

This 315kW electric motor along with a few others on site at one of their customers has the Meerkat web-based Condition Monitoring System installed.

From the start of February this motor was showing high vibration velocities at the drive end. the guys on site saw this and decided to give it a bit of love, so around midnight on St Valentine's day, it got swapped out with a new motor. It doesn't take a data analyst to see that the vibration levels have reduced to much better levels indeed.

That's as simple as it need to be in my opinion. Have sensors monitor what's happening on your equipment, when something changes (as in this case the vibration level were too high) a notification is given by email and/or text message, then plan in to swap the motor out. The newly installed motor can then be monitored along with the other motors on the plant.

Predictive online condition monitoring systems such as this give you the data needed to keep your plant running reliably. It's as simple as that.

We could go into more depth detailing the measurements that the system takes but why complicate what's meant to be a simple message? If you would like to know more though, please feel free to message or call us.
