What are Vibration Monitoring Systems?

A vibration monitoring system is a tool that identifies and monitors irregularities and other anomalies in a machines operational health by measuring its vibration levels.

As part of a condition monitoring system, vibration sensors help to detect machine damage, early and allow for maintenance to be planned; preventing expensive damage, loss of production, and labour productivity.

Vibration Monitoring Systems can be considered an early warning system, preventing equipment failure and are an important part of Reliability Services.

What do Vibration Monitoring Systems do?

A major benefit of Vibration Monitoring is its ability to inform decision-making. Allowing you to plan production and maintenance schedules around the health of your machinery.

Vibration detects common problems

Where there are moving parts, there is vibration. Vibration can, and does wear components. This leads to reduced life span, increased noise and in worst case scenarios, equipment failure and Health & Safety issues.  Rotating moving parts can become misaligned or imbalanced. This can lead to cracks, breaks on drive shafts and other components

Visibility of Vibration Concerns

A vibration monitoring system will provide a visual illustration of the health of your equipment. This is generated through a method known as vibration trend analysis. Normal operational parameters are set (the machines vibration signature).  Where there are deviations from the vibration signature the monitoring system records and visualises these in a wave form. The more severe the variation the further up a colour coded hierarchy the wave form will be coloured. In example an amber waveform is a cause for concern, red is an imminent failure.

Vibration Monitoring by Fletcher Moorland

Our Reliability Services team, offer Meerkat our easily scalable, condition monitoring system. Meerkat provides continuous vibration monitoring with waveform and data correlation. This robust monitoring systems allows operators to incorporate alarms and shutdown processes based on real time data. Accessible through a cloud based interface on most smart devices.

MORE ON MEERKAT

There are a number of common applications for Vibration Monitoring Systems. We’ll list some of the most common uses below:
Equipment including turbines, fans, motors and gearboxes which have rotating elements will commonly be fitted with a vibration monitoring system. It is important to have an early warning system in place to prevent catastrophic failure. Investing in a vibration monitoring system like Meerkat can help identify bearing faults, unbalance, misalignment and resonance issues in rotating machinery.
