Raising the Roof: Welcoming Our DMG Mori DMU 50 to Stoke-on-Trent
In late May 2025 on an overcast Saturday morning in Stoke-on-Trent, while many were enjoying a weekend lie-in, our workshop was a buzz with anticipation.
We took delivery of a serious piece of kit, a brand new DMG Mori DMU 50, 5-axis milling machine. It’s the latest addition to our continued investment in world-class engineering capability, forming a core part of our £700,000 expansion in our Precision Engineering Department.
This was no simple delivery!
Due to the sheer scale and complexity of the equipment, we weren’t able to simply roll it through the front doors, we’d never be able to navigate our corridors even if we did!
Instead, we had to take an altogether more ambitious route. One that posed significant risk.
We realised part of our workshop roof had to come off.
Lifting the Roof on Advanced Manufacturing

That’s right, a section of our building was temporarily removed to make way for the DMU 50 to arrive.
With meticulous preparation and a team of professionals on hand, the lift began.
Naturally, as if to add to the drama, the wind picked up the moment the crane started its ascent. It’s the sort of thing you couldn’t make up, Stoke’s own weather playing its part in making this an even more nerve racking occasion. As the DMU 50 was raised high above our premises, it became briefly silhouetted against the skyline. A fantastic sight, and not one we’re likely to forget.
Precision Planning for Precision Engineering
Despite the challenge, the operation was a textbook example of precision planning and calm execution. Our lifting team delivered a faultless performance, lowering the equipment down through one of the tightest of gaps. There was no room for error, but thanks to the coordination, preparation, and discipline of everyone involved, the machine touched down safely into its new home.
The DMU 50 is no small addition. It marks a significant step forward in our capabilities. With full 5-axis machining, it allows us to undertake highly complex components with tighter tolerances and improved surface finishes, all in fewer operations. This machine supports our goal of keeping more advanced manufacturing in-house, improving lead times for our customers and further enhancing the quality we deliver.
Ready to Produce Components
We’ve already begun preparing work for the DMU 50, and it won’t be long before the spindle starts turning and it becomes an integral part of our production workflow. Whether it’s prototyping, one-off components or low to medium volume production, this machine positions us at the cutting edge of engineering technology.
Investing in new equipment is always exciting. But it’s not just about having the latest gear, it’s about what it enables us to do for our customers. It’s about continuing to grow, pushing our capabilities forward, and doing it all from right here in Stoke-on-Trent.
The sky may well have been grey that Saturday morning, but there was a definite buzz in the air. Our DMU 50 has landed and we’re ready to put it to work.
