Phew, it’s getting hot in here…
When you can't handle the heat!

The windings and bearing on this Brook Crompton UK Limited AC electric motor that’s come to us for an urgent repair over this weekend.
The blackening of the copper windings and charring of the insulation are sure signs that this motor has been overloaded. Maybe the overload protection wasn’t working or setup properly?
In turn, the heat generated internally has dried out the grease resulting in a bearing failure.
Overloaded windings and failures like this used to be very common indeed. It’s been quite a while since I’ve seen one as totally cooked as this.
Due to the heat generated internally in the core iron, this’ll need a core loss test carried out to see if it’s in a good enough condition to rewind.
It’s very likely that the core is compromised, the heat generated causing the interlaminar insulation to break down. This would mean that if we rewound the motor, it wouldn’t be as efficient as it should be, and, quite likely to turn the lost electrical energy into more heat! Those pesky eddy current losses.
The economical route on this one was replacement.
