Annual Golf Day | August 2025

Fletcher Moorland’s 2025 Golf Day at JCB Golf and Country Club

If you haven’t had the chance to play JCB Golf and Country Club, let me set the scene. Rolling Staffordshire countryside, immaculate fairways cut with the precision of an engineer’s micrometer, and greens that seem to dare you to underestimate them. It’s a course that rewards accuracy but is utterly ruthless if you drift into the rough, or worse, the water.

Beyond the golf, our day had a purpose. We are incredibly proud to have raised £690 for the Douglas Macmillan Hospice, an organisation close to many of our hearts. This fundraising formed part of Matt Fletcher’s wider efforts as he utilising his twinkle toes will be taking part in Strictly Knot Dancing.

A Surprise Addition

As is often the way with events like these, the unexpected brings a new dimension. Due to a last-minute drop out, we were joined by none other than Luke Sherwin, a young rising star in UK golf. Luke’s presence was a treat for everyone. Watching him glide through his swing, shaping shots that seemed effortless, gave us all a glimpse of what dedication and talent can achieve.

    The Competition

Now to the competition itself. And what a competition it was. The JCB course played tough. The fairways were narrower than some remembered, the wind seemed mischievously inconsistent, and the water hazards, well, let’s just say they were visited often, some even waded in after their putter!

The most coveted award of the day, and perhaps the one most hotly contested, was the infamous “Losing Most Balls” title.

A light-hearted honour, but one that reflects the reality of playing such a demanding course. Players dropped into the rough like explorers entering a jungle, sometimes never to be seen again. Others splashed into the ponds, lakes, and streams that seemed to be magnetically charged for golf balls.

After much debate, and a thorough count, the award was finally claimed by Luke Thomas, who achieved the staggering feat of losing over 15 balls. That’s not just commitment to the award, that’s artistry. It takes a special kind of consistency to find trouble that many times in one round.

    The Team Battle

While the “most balls lost” award brought the laughter, the serious bragging rights came in the team event. With players combining their talents, strategies, and sometimes sheer luck, it was a hard-fought contest.

In the end, the champions were the formidable team of Rich Urwin, Matt Ball, Dan Stephen, and Karl Bell.

    The Individual Glory

And then there’s the ultimate accolade, the overall event winner. This year that honour went to Liam Hosey. Liam played superbly throughout, combining accuracy with composure. While others wrestled with the rough and cursed the bunkers, Liam seemed to find the fairways more often than not, and his putting was a masterclass in calm precision. To walk away as the top individual in a field full of competitors is no small achievement.

Reflecting on the day, it’s hard not to feel an immense sense of pride. Pride in the money raised for Douglas Macmillan Hospice. Pride in how everyone pulled together to make the event a success. Pride in showcasing Fletcher Moorland’s values not just as a company, but as a community.

The 2025 Golf Day sets the bar for the future. We’ve seen what’s possible when we combine a world-class venue, enthusiastic participants, and a worthy cause. Plans are already bubbling for how we can make the next one even bigger, even better, and hopefully even more rewarding.

Will we raise more for charity? Will we attract more rising stars like Luke Sherwin? Will someone manage to top 15 lost balls? Only time will tell.

A huge thank you to JCB Golf and Country Club for hosting us on their magnificent course, to everyone who took part with such enthusiasm, to those who donated so generously, and to the Douglas Macmillan Hospice for the incredible work they do every day.

And finally, congratulations once again to our champions:

      • Most Balls Lost – Luke Thomas (over 15 balls!)
      • Team Event Winners – Rich Urwin, Matt Ball, Dan Stephen, and Karl Bell
      • Overall Champion – Liam Hosey

Until next year, keep your drives straight, your putts firm, and maybe, just maybe, pack a few extra balls in the bag.
