Why complete Maintenance on your Servo Motor?

It’s important to carry out maintenance on your Servo Motors.

Servo Motors are exposed to highly demanding operating conditions. They run at high speeds, often under heavy loads and for extensive periods of time, including in some circumstances continuous operation.

Without carrying out regular maintenance there is an increased risk in these motors developing issues that can lead to down time and in a worst case scenario, critical failure!

A robust maintenance routine can help extend the working lifespan of your servo motor and keep it running with precision.

Fletcher Moorland Servo Motor Maintenance Top Tips!

Not everyone may feel comfortable completing every stage of our maintenance tips for servo motors. Which is why there are expert Servo Motor repairers like Fletcher Moorland to handle that work.

Cleaning Your Servo Motor

It makes sense that cleaning your Servo Motor will help keep it running, and should be part of your general machine maintenance schedule.

There are lots of contaminants, including dust, debris and moisture which can build up on your Servo Motor and without regular cleaning impact on its performance.

Performing, regular routine cleaning of your Servo Motors is our number one top tip!

Carry out a Winding Analysis

Completing a winding analysis on a Servo Motor is how you measure the resistance between the phase wires. The resistance should be balanced.

When completing your analysis you should compare your new readings against your phase tolerance levels. If there is significant variance or deviation, this is an indicator that there could be a problem developing with your Servo Motor. This could include a short circuit or open winding (an open winding is where the wire has been broken).

At Fletcher Moorland we go beyond this standard of testing. We’ve invested in specialist surge testing equipment that allows us to carry out an enhanced version of this!

SERVO Motor ALignment

Misalignment can mean that the Servo Motor has to use increased energy. This will put extra strain on the bearings, seals and shafts. Increased wear and tear that can lead to more frequent and additional maintenance costs.

Regular motor alignment, won’t just help keep your Servo running at peak performance, it can help to avoid equipment failure, downtime and additional expenses.

Servo Motor Encoder Alignment

Encoder alignment can seem like a complex task and is one perhaps best left to the experts!

This involves understanding the electrical angle of the motor and adjusting the encoder as required. One challenge may be finding your OEM hasn’t provided a “standard” alignment for your specific encoder. This is easily overcome. You’ll need to access the encoders memory and the information you require on your Encoder Alignment will be found there.

At Fletcher Moorland we use a number of encoder testers including the Lineax3 RunWell by Octava using a number of encoder testers allows us to compete a thorough analysis, cross reference and compare reports. Preventing invalid reports and ensuring the Encoder Alignment is as accurate as possible.

Servo Motor Resolver Alignment

Resolver alignment will help the regulation of speed, torque and positioning of your motors shaft. If your Servo Motors shafts become unaligned it can lead to greater wear and tear, reduced efficiency and in the worst case catastrophic failure.

The process of resolver alignment is passing a DC current through the motor, rotating the resolver until your target output is achieved.

Monitoring the Temperature of your Servo Motor

You likely know that Servo Motors generate heat when in operation. An increase in the temperature can be an indicating of an impending problem. To avoid heat build up it’s important to have adequate ventilation and cooling systems in place.

Taking preventative measures, like investing in a condition monitoring system will allow you to set operational tolerances and receive automated alerts should your servo motors temperature approach or exceed them.

Motor Vibration Monitoring is another process of keeping track of the operational performance of your Servo Motor.

Where there are moving parts there are vibrations. Vibrations can and do wear components down. Vibration Monitoring your Servo Motor with a condition monitoring system can help give early warnings of mis-alignment, imbalance or other problems that lead to component failure.

Servo Motor - Brake Holding Torque

The aim of your Servo Motors brake is to hold a load in place when the drive is shutdown. Variations in the current of the brake, may prevent the brake from holding properly.

Checking your brake holding torque (the power required to force your motors shaft to be stationary), can be done by checking the resistance of the Servo Motor. A voltage test is another option, but you’ll want to do this after removing the motor from your machine.
