Motors Jim – Not as we know them!
I Love EV MOTORS!

I love seeing these electric motors in the workshops, they're a little different to the standard industrial electric motors I got my hands on over 40 years ago when I started off in the industry.
All these photos show different types of electric motors used in bus, coach, truck and off-highway vehicles. They form part of the growing low carbon transportation industry.
There are three types of BAE Systems units, a TB08, a TB100 and a TB200. A couple of BYD hub motors and several YASA axial flux units.
Ok, they are a little different to a traditional electric motor. Some have permanent magnet rotors, all have feedback position sensors of one type or another, plus other types of sensors and auxiliary equipment too. At their heart is a wound stator so anyone who works with electric motors would recognise those. That is apart from the YASA axial flux motor, they're full of impressive magic-trickery Mr Faraday designed around 200 years ago, but now can be put to use.
I think there are a great example of how an industry can enter a diverse market having the skill sets already in place. To fully understand these does take a bit of input from the research and development guys, this is a task I relish. Taking apart new-ish technology to figure out how it works and to devise a repeatable repair and refurbishment process for them.
The TB08 unit has been around for about 15 years now so is mature technology, the newer YASA units, only a few years, but in my opinion should really take off with their impressive power to weight density.
